There is nothing more freeing than hitting the open road on a motorcycle. However, a collision with another motorist can result in catastrophic personal injuries including but not limited to spinal cord injuries and traumatic brain injuries.

If you have been involved in a motorcycle accident, there are a few important steps you should take immediately.

Check Yourself for Injuries

Clear the cobwebs and check yourself for injuries. If you are injured, try not to move as long as it’s safe to stay where you are. Dial 911 for help no matter the significance of the injuries.

Take Photos Immediately After the Collision

If you’re not incapacitated, taking thorough pictures immediately following a motorcycle accident is highly advised. Take as many pictures from multiple angles. The pictures will be helpful when you or the other motorist make claims to respective insurance agencies. It will also prevent any unwanted deceitful behavior.

Speak to Witnesses

If possible, speak to people who witnessed the accident, and write down their names and contact information for later. This can greatly help build your case should it be necessary to go to trial.

Contact Your Insurance Company

Call your insurance agent, and give them all pertinent information on the collision. Do not admit fault to your insurance company. If they ask about injuries, make sure to hold off until you have a thorough inspection from a licensed physician. Similarly, take your bike to the shop for an accurate evaluation on the damages.

Exchange Information and Fill Out a Police Report

Contact your local police department and request a police report. Having an official report will help protect your rights and earn potential damages in a court case.

Make sure to get all the necessary contact information from the other motorist involved in the incident. Record the badge number, officer name, license plate numbers, along with the make and model of the vehicle. Always get as much information possible just to be safe.
